Ukraine tops the list of European countries when it comes to the rates of HIV spreading, and it is one of the top countries in the world list, too.

There are millions of HIV positive people in the world, and millions of those struggling with AIDS. Despite the state efforts and aid from international charity institutions the disease counteraction is far from efficient. Ukraine has one of the fastest rates of HIV spreading in the world. Nikolaevskaya and Odesskaya oblasts face the highest level of morbidity. Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk, Odessa, Simferopol and Nikolaev are the top five cities as to the number of infected people.

Statistics on HIV/AIDS patients in Ukraine

As by April 1 2009 in Ukraine there were officially registered (total):

HIV-positive: 146 549 people, 21 938 of them - children.
(specialists believe that the real number of the HIV-positive is 8-10 times more)
AIDS patients: 28 009.

Died of AIDS: 15 866 patients.

The problem of HIV/AIDS is not only in the infection itself, but in the attitude towards the HIV-positive people. Myths about ways of infection, abandonment of the children born from HIV-positive mothers, lack of education on bringing up HIV-positive children – these are just a few of the reasons for deepening the problem of HIV/AIDS.

Many come to think about this problem for there are more and more relatives and friends hit by HIV/AIDS. And the issue is no longer how to escape infection, but how to live with HIV or AIDS.

Being HIV-positive or sick with AIDS is still even more dangerous for the children that our society calls orphans with the parents alive. Such children should receive special care and treatment.
